DESCRIPTION:Noted author and evolutionary biologist Kenneth Miller, of Brown University, will speak. His talk is titled “Only a Theory? Evolution, Darwin and the Question of Design.”\nMiller, a practicing Roman Catholic and author of widely used biology textbooks, was the lead witness in the 2005 Dover, Penn., court battle over the mandatory teaching of Intelligent Design Theory in biology classes in the county’s public schools. His testimony, which was extensively covered in the New Yorker, was instrumental in the judge’s ruling that Intelligent Design is another form of creationism, and therefore is fundamentally rooted in religion, not science. Miller has been a repeat guest on The Colbert Report advancing his view that God and evolutionary theory are not mutually incompatible, and debunking the arguments of the proponents of Intelligent Design.\nThe event is part of Le Moyne’s celebration of the bicentennial of the birth of Charles Darwin. Miller, whose campus appearance coincides with the 150th anniversary of the publication of “Origin of Species,” is the author of “Finding Darwin's God” and “Only a Theory” among other works.\nThe event is free and open to the public and is sponsored by the Sanzone Center for Catholic Studies and Theological Reflection and the Center for the Study of Environmental Change. For more information, call (315) 445-4279.
