James A. Longo, M.D., F.A.C.C. ’77
and Christine Zapf-Longo ’79
The Simon Le Moyne Award embodies the virtues of charity, kindness and humility that characterized its namesake. So, too, do devoted alumni Jim and Chris Longo.
Three decades ago, the Longos met as students on the Heights. And during that time, the Jesuit spirit of service to others instilled in them by their families was nurtured and they continued to grow – academically and spiritually.
Those closest to the Longos know them as people of deep faith, vision and courage. They are, first and foremost, partners who have supported each other in everything they've done since the day they were married 29 years ago. Their partnership includes their professional lives and their efforts behind the scenes to improve the lives of others in their community. Jim serves on numerous committees at Crouse Hospital, where he is a practicing cardiologist. He also gives generously of his time as a member of the Le Moyne College Board of Regents. Chris has worked with the auxiliary at the Christ the King Retreat House, helping to plan its annual dinner dance, and regularly assists with the food drive at Immaculate Conception Parish.
A biology major at Le Moyne, Chris minored in both chemistry and philosophy, truly embracing the ideals of a well-rounded, liberal arts education. Her ability not just to conduct research but to think broadly and critically has served her in good stead throughout her professional life, including in her work as a radiopharmacist and research assistant at Upstate Medical University, and in her current role as a technology coordinator and computer teacher at Immaculate Conception School.
As a physician, Jim provides outstanding, compassionate care to each and every one of his patients. He also continues to serve his alma mater as the founding medical director of the College's Physician Assistant Studies Program. Since its establishment in 1996, the program has helped prepare more that 360 men and women to enter this noble profession with confidence in their abilities and a profound sensitivity to the needs of their patients. Jim is both a teacher and amentor to our students, and his unique gifts have helped the program to grow and thrive.
Yet this couple's most lasting legacy is not their work, but the family they have rasied. To their daughters, Katie and Meg, the Longos are models of faith, and have taught them to see the best in others, and to always remember who they are and who they aspire to be. Above all else, family is the central force in their parents' lives, Katie and Meg share.
In everything they do, Jim and Chris Longo embody a selflessness, diligence and unflagging goodwill that are truly inspirational. For all that they do, Le Moyne College is pleased to bestow
James A. Longo and Christine R. Zapf-Longo
with the 2009 Simon Le Moyne Award.
