Lectures Committee Funding Deadline Nov. 30

The Lectures Committee is accepting applications for events taking place during the Spring 2010 semester. The deadline for applications is Monday, November 30. Application forms are available for download at the Web site listed below. Completed applications are to be directed to Dan Roche, Chair of the Lectures Committee, via email at rochedm@lemoyne.edu or campus mail. The purpose of the Lectures Committee is to assist in funding events that enhance the intellectual life of the college outside the classroom. Eligible events are not limited to traditional lecture format, but may include elements of round table discussions, demonstrations, and events that have interactive aspects, performance elements, and the like. Faculty, staff, and students organizing events under the auspices of a recognized college organization (such as a college office, an academic department, or a student club) are eligible to apply for Lectures Committee funding. The Committee is a funding group only, not an organizing or publicity group. Organizers are reminded to make necessary arrangements to reserve facilities. The Lectures Committee particularly welcomes proposals cosponsored by more than one campus organization, and it would be reluctant to be an event's sole funder. Normally the Committee would not consider honoraria for guest speakers within a particular course. The Committee generally allocates half of its annual budget for fall semester events and half for spring events. If there are funds still available after awards are made from this second round of proposals, the Committee will put out an additional call for proposals due in the first half of March. The Committee will usually decide on applications within two to three weeks of these deadlines.

Next Student Research Funding Proposal Deadline Nov. 23

TO:ALL STUDENTS ALL FACULTY FROM: Linda Le Mura,Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs DATE: Academic Year 2009-2010 SUBJECT: FUNDING FOR UNDERGRADUATE STUDENT SCHOLARSHIP PROPOSAL DEADLINES: November 23, 2009 February 1, 2010 March 1, 2010 April 19, 2010 [for Summer funding] I wish to enthusiastically announce the call from the Student Research Committee for proposals that provide the opportunity for undergraduate students to obtain institutional funding for performing research and scholarship under the direction of a faculty mentor. In addition, course credit also may be earned. The committee will consider proposals for a variety of independent research activities from all academic disciplines, including but not limited to: travel to archives, laboratory expenses, some photocopying and mailing expenses (e.g. for distribution of surveys), subject stipends, fieldwork expenses, and travel to conferences to present research. Food and stipends for the students themselves or faculty supervisors are not supported. The average award in the past has been approximately $720, with an annual cap of $1,000 per student unless there are additional funds remaining at the end of the year. (This has not normally been the case, however.) Students receiving these awards will be honored as they present their work at the Le Moyne Scholars Day to be held in the spring. Visit the Student Research Committee web page for detailed instructions on how to complete proposals. Proposals will be reviewed by a committee consisting of faculty members, plus a student chosen by the Academic Affairs Committee of the Student Senate. The committee will rely on the following criteria to evaluate proposals: 1. Completeness and quality of proposal. 2. Scope of research (priority will be given to major independent research projects over research efforts undertaken for a regular course). 3. Coherence and significance of the research project. 4. Quality of research evident in the proposal. These awards are becoming increasingly competitive as student scholarship grows at Le Moyne. Application is not a guarantee of an award. Proposals may be returned for further information or revision before a final decision is rendered. Quality of both the proposal itself and the proposed project are strong determinants of success. The committee will make its recommendations to the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs within two weeks of the published deadlines. After notifying student applicants and faculty sponsors about the committee's recommendations, the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs will publish a list of the recipients of student research grants. Grants must be used in the current academic year. Thank you for your interest in undergraduate student scholarship. Please refer any questions about this process to Dr. David Craig (craigda@lemoyne.edu) or to Dr. Linda Le Mura (lemuralm@lemoyne.edu).
