Syracuse James Joyce Club 2013 Creative Writing Contest: Deadline May 29

The James Joyce 2013 Writing Contest awards will be presented during our 20th “Bloomsday,” Saturday, June 15, in Grewen Auditorium. “Bloomsday” is celebrated around the world with the reading of James Joyce's classic, "Ulysses," widely considered the major novel of the 20th Century. Our marathon reading event, from noon until 10 p.m., follows the format of a Dublin-style Bloomsday. A number of Syracuse community leaders in media, theatre, academia, literature, sports and political life, will each select and read a brief excerpt from Joyce's writings. As part of the Irish American Cultural Institute, the SJJC Bloomsday performances annually attract a wide and diverse audience. Through the generosity of Le Moyne College, the Joyce Club is offering $1000 in cash prizes, including two memorial awards, in acknowledging the extraordinary contribution to the Club since its founding by Nancy Duffy and Richard Long. Winners will also receive attractive Joyce award certificates. The writing contest is limited to Central New York students, with separate prizes for college students and high school seniors. Each applicant should electronically submit either: • a critical essay relating to Joyce: his life, his work, his influence, etc; or • a short story, to be preceded by a brief description of its pertinence to Joyce’s characters, settings or techniques. Entries should be sent as an attachment to an email to the Syracuse James Joyce Club (SJJC), in care of Professor Michael Loudis at loudismj@morrisville.edu The James Joyce Club Scholarship Awards are intended to recognize the intellectual curiosity of our young people, while promoting an awareness in our schools of Joyce’s contribution to modern literature. For further information (not submittals!), contact: Basil Dillon-Malone, Chair, James Joyce Contest 2013, 4083 Sweet Gum, Liverpool, N.Y. 13090 Phone: (315) 622-1132 email: dillon-malone.basil@arcomlabs.com Additional Contest Rules [1] The limit for the high school essay is 1000 words for high school seniors, 1500 words for college students. College Receives Grant from Arts & Cultural Research Fund

A cross-disciplinary team of faculty has received funding to conduct research on the consequences of various types of social capital for civic life in the arts community, as well as the financial return on investment of fostering a strong relationship between the arts community and other local banks of social capital. The $15,000 grant is derived from the Arts & Culture Research Fund, which includes contributions by the New York Community Trust, the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, New York Council for the Humanities, and the John R. Oishei Foundation. Given the recent economic downturn and its effects on arts organizations state-wide, the researchers hope to find correlations that will help arts and cultural organizations to create long term sustainability models. The research team includes professors Matthew Loveland (Sociology), Travis Newton (Arts Administration), Delia Popescu (Political Science) and Frank Ridzi (Sociology). The team also includes Olive Sephuma, Director of Community Grantmaking at the Central New York Community Foundation. “We understand intuitively that cultural activities are essential for the health of the community,” says Le Moyne Provost Linda LeMura, “but research is imperative to gauge how the arts integrate with the economic interests of the city. Our team of interdisciplinary scholars bring their diverse talents to bear on this challenge.” Research findings will be disseminated in a number of ways, including a policy memo to be circulated online, via local community and arts organization list-servs, and through presentations to interested arts and cultural institutions. Team members will also tweet results periodically, using #SocietyAndArt.
